40 die in Kerala road accident
The Times of India
Malappuram, Kerala - In one of the worst road mishaps in
Kerala, at least 40 people were burnt alive on Sunday
when a private bus they were travelling in caught fire
after colliding with a car in Malappuram district of the
state, police said.
Only five managed to escape with serious injuries and
were admitted to the Kozhikode Medical College. Among
those in critical condition were the four passengers of
the car, including two women and two children.
Eyewitnesses said the mishap occurred when the bus tried
to overtake a state transport corporation bus at high
speed and collided with a car coming from the opposite
direction at Pookiparambu in Tirurangadi
The vehicle capsized and its diesel tank immediately
burst into flames, giving no chance to the passengers to
escape.
Nearly 90 per cent of the bus had been burnt and the
bodies charred beyond recognition.
Thirteen bodies - 10 adults and three children - had been
retrieved from the wreckage of the bus, police said.
As soon as the mishap occurred, local people began taking
the victims to nearby hospitals in jeeps and
autorickshaws.
According to unconfirmed reports, the bus carried at
least 70 passengers.
Meanwhile, Chief Minister E K Nayanar expressed grief
over the incident.
The Chief Minister has directed the Malappuram district
collector to provide immediate relief to the next of kin
of those killed and those injured in the accident, a
press release said.
The transport commissioner, K P Somarajan, said a
comprehensive inquiry would be ordered into the accident.
Transport minister, C K Nanu and the minister for
scheduled castes and tribes K Radhakrishnan have rushed
to the accident spot. (PTI)
